The title for this painting, “All The Things You Are” is from a song by jazz saxophonist Charlie Parker. This work started as part my “murmuration series” about birds in flight but became about sound. In jazz music, a “contrafact” is a new song made from part of an existing one (ie a new melody overlaid a familiar chord progression). The new song borrows from the old but sounds totally different, and this painting is like that. The abstracted imagery of birds is borrowed from my earlier work, but there is an added layer of sound created by their intentional placement: the birds correspond to the song’s chords and musical notes visualized. This concept later became the basis for my “voicemail paintings” about sound waves of language.
