The title for this painting is taken from Greek mythology and the thought experiment surrounding Theseus’ ship. In order to preserve the boat and complete their voyage, Theseus and his men replaced rotted wood on their ship as they sailed. The question is if by the end of their journey, the boat has been completely replaced by new wood, is it the same boat. It is a question of identity; this theory states that two ships, while identical in all other ways, are not identical if they exist at two different times.
