I first came across “colpo di fulmine” in a story by Italo Calvino. The phrase is the Italian equivalent of “love at first sight”. But when translated word by word, the expression implies to be struck by lighting since colpo is the word for “hit” and fulmine is “a bolt of lightning”. Some of my monochromatic paintings refer to the coexistence of opposing elements (ie light and dark), and this theme of contrast has unconsciously carried over into my gold leaf text paintings. The phrases or words in my paintings are selected because there is more than one interpretation and also because I like the word(s). I was therefore drawn to colpo di fulmine because it simultaneously embodies sentiments of pleasure (falling in love) and pain (being struck and possibly killed by lightning). There is something poetic albeit disturbing about the idea that one might die when falling in love.
